Monticello Explore the house, gardens, and plantation of Monticello, the mountaintop home of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and author of the of the Declaration of Independence. The house is of Jefferson's own design and is situated on the summit of an 850-foot-high peak. Monticello was designed and redesigned for more than forty years and is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson.
